Can’t See Past the Glare? Your Windshield May Deserve a Closer Look

Low-angle sunlight can reveal streaks, haze, and glass damage you barely notice during the rest of the day.

You pull out of the neighborhood, turn toward the sun, and suddenly every streak on your windshield lights up.

A moment ago, the glass looked fine. Now you’re adjusting the visor and trying to see past a bright haze.

As the days shorten, sunrise and sunset can overlap with your daily commute. For Arizona drivers, that makes windshield clarity especially noticeable during school drop-offs, morning errands, and the drive home.

The sun itself is part of the challenge. But what’s on your windshield, or worn into its surface, can make seeing through it harder.

Start With a Clean Windshield, Inside and Out

Before assuming the glass needs replacement, give both sides a thorough cleaning.

Dust, fingerprints, interior film, and leftover cleaning residue can interfere with visibility. Cleaning only the outside leaves half the job unfinished, especially when a hazy film has built up inside.

Use an automotive glass cleaner suitable for your windows and a clean microfiber towel. Follow the product instructions and avoid wiping with a towel that already contains dirt or oily residue.

Check the results while safely parked. If the haze disappears, surface buildup may have been the main issue.

When Those Tiny Specks Are Actually Pitting

Sometimes the windshield still looks speckled after cleaning.

Over time, airborne debris can leave tiny pits in the glass. These small surface imperfections may be difficult to notice in ordinary light but become distracting when illuminated by a rising or setting sun.

Pitting is different from dirt. Another round of cleaning will not remove damage worn into the surface.

If persistent speckling or glare is affecting your view, have the windshield assessed. A badly pitted windshield may need professional windshield replacement, even when it does not have one obvious large crack.

Give Existing Chips and Cracks Some Attention

Cleaning is also a good opportunity to look for damage you’ve grown used to seeing.

That little chip near the passenger side or crack along the edge deserves a closer look. Its appearance alone does not tell you whether it can be repaired.

ProView’s windshield chip repair service can help address qualifying damage. A professional assessment determines whether repair or replacement is appropriate.

Addressing damage and reducing glare are related visibility concerns, but repairing a chip does not remove widespread pitting or guarantee a completely invisible repair.

Check What Your Wipers Leave Behind

If your windshield looks clear until you use the washer, pay attention to the blades.

Wipers that leave streaks or patches of residue can make it harder to keep the glass clean. Arizona’s long stretches of heat can also take a toll on the rubber.

Test the washer and wipers while parked. If they leave smears instead of clearing the glass, inspect the blades and replace them when needed.

Keeping the windshield clean is an ongoing habit, especially when dusty conditions quickly undo your work.

A Clear Windshield Helps, but the Sun Still Matters

Even clean, undamaged glass cannot eliminate direct sunlight.

Use your visor when appropriate, keep enough following distance to allow more reaction time, and adjust your driving to the visibility available. If you cannot see adequately, find a safe place to stop.

Windshield replacement should address a glass problem identified through assessment. It should not be presented as a cure for every form of sun glare.

Let ProView Help You Understand What You’re Seeing

If cleaning does not resolve persistent haze, speckling, or visible damage, the next step is understanding the condition of the glass.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my windshield look hazy when I drive toward the sun?

Low-angle sunlight can make dirt, streaks, and interior film more noticeable. Surface wear, including pitting, can also interfere with visibility. Start by cleaning both sides of the windshield, then have persistent problems assessed.

Can cleaning fix a pitted windshield?

Cleaning can remove surface contamination, but it cannot remove pits in the glass. If pitting is affecting visibility, an auto-glass professional can evaluate whether replacement is appropriate.

Do I need a new windshield if I experience sun glare?

Not automatically. Direct sunlight can cause glare through clean glass, while residue or glass damage can make the problem worse. Replacement should be based on the windshield’s condition rather than glare alone.

Will repairing a chip remove all the glare?

No. Chip repair addresses qualifying localized damage. It does not remove interior film, wiper streaks, or widespread pitting, and the repaired area may remain visible.
